After a trial court has entered a final judgment in a criminal case, the client only has 30 days to file a notice of appeal in a criminal case. It is even less in a family matter. Once an appeal has been initiated, the next step is to gather all of the documents and exhibits filed in the case, as well as every transcript of the court proceedings (both pre-trial and trial). These documents must be paid for and sent to the appellate court with jurisdiction over the case.
After the appellate court has received all of the documents pertaining to the direct appeal, the appellate court will set a deadline for briefing to be filed. Andrea Simmons will review every document and transcript in the case to identify possible issues to raise on direct appeal, and will conduct the legal research to support those arguments for presentation to the appellate court.
